The Monterrey Metropolitan Area (population of over 4 million) is actually made up of Monterrey proper and six other municipalities – Apodaca, San Nicolas de los Garza, Guadalupe, Escobedo, Santa Catarina, San Pedro Garza Garcia –
each with its own mayor and city hall. Most foreigners live in the municipality of San Pedro Garza Garcia, in the southwest quadrant of the metropolitan area. It is also known as the
Colonia or Valle. This municipality is again divided into sub-divisions or
colonias (abbreviated as Col.) Although almost all of the sectors in San Pedro Garza Garcia area are nice, some offer unique differences and characteristics. For example:

Houses are built out of cement blocks, concrete and plaster. Beautiful construction materials are used in the homes, and it is not uncommon to view rentals with hard-wood floors, granite counter tops in the bathrooms and kitchen and natural stone on the facade. There is a wide array of architectural styles, ranging from the older US style ranch-type homes to Mediterranean style villas or chalets and modern apartments and condos. Because of high property values (in San Pedro this can range from $50.00 US dlls to $100 US dlls a square foot) newer homes usually have small to medium size yards (and pools are not as common as one would expect). Most colonias have nicely kept safe parks and there are a number of well located jogging paths.
